Vegetable Garden

Organic Garden

Want to grow a vegetable garden? Anyone can do it! Grow your vegetable garden in raised beds, pots or plots.  Start your plants from seed or buy already started plants.

A Vegetable Garden can save you money and give you the peace of mind of knowing what you are putting into your body.  With the recalls of food in this day and age I am happy that I can provide my family with our own food.

Your own vegetable garden is one of the best investments you can give to yourself and your family.  It’s also a great way to get the kids involved.  My grandchildren come out every spring to learn and help, and every year they get to pick a vegetable of their own to grow.  They have also learned that along with the fun comes the weeding.

Growing my own garden for years has not come without a lot of trial and error.  I love to experiment with new things and that has left me surprised and disappointed at times.  One year I was lucky enough to have a great harvest of corn, which doesn’t normally grow here, so every year since I’ve been trying for another harvest to no avail, but all in all at the end of the season we have a freezer full of homegrown vegetables.

This year will be a year of building new gardens at the new property, I will share my experience and research over the years so you to can enjoy the benefits of a homegrown harvest.  There is nothing like walking out the door and picking a fresh tomato off the vine, or some lettuce, radishes and onions for a salad.

Anyone can grow a vegetable garden whether you live in an apartment or a home with land. Vegetables can be grown in the ground, in containers, in straw bales and even mixed in with your flowers.

You don’t need a greenhouse to grow your vegetables even in cooler climates; there are all kinds of crop protectors out there.  I’ve used a few of them myself.

Growing your own food not only saves you money at the Grocery store but it puts you in charge of what is going into your body.  You decide whether you want to spray your vegetables or grow them organically.

It’s not always easy, we have had a garden almost ready to harvest and the deer find their way in.  I’ve tried a few different techniques to keep them out, but in the end a tall fence is the best.

Gardening season is just around the corner….time to start thinking of what to grow.

  1. Hi there,

I’ve found your article fascinating as I love all about plants and one of my biggest dreams is to grow my own vegetable garden! You said that we grow our own vegetable garden in an apartment, but I was wondering if it wouldn’t be a problem for the vegetable to grow properly as the root need a lot of space to be able to grow in the ground. Also, wouldn’t it be better for the vegetables to grow in the sun instead of receiving artificial light? Sorry for all those questions:)
Thank you very much for this excellent post!

    • Hi Daniella,

Not all vegetables have a long root system. Things like lettuce, spinach and chard can be easily grown in the house in pots. I have also grown tomatoes indoors – they do have a longer root system so I put them in deep pots. If you don’t have a lot of natural lighting then grow lights work well. They are made especially for growing plants. Hope I was able to answer your questions. I will be adding more pages in the future, please stop by again.

  2. thank you for this encouraging post. I am so looking forward to becoming more self sufficient and off grid in the future, but growing produce really is a big hurdle for me. As I don’t have a green thumb at all.

Actually I have been know to kill the unkillable Aloe Vera plant. So a fruit and veg garden will be a very steep learning curve for me.

Any advise what the easiest to grow is, so I can get in my first win?

    • Don’t worry Linda, I’ve killed Aloe Vera Plants in the past too. I think I over watered them. Of the top of my head I think the easiest thing to grow is probably radishes, another is dill. I have dill coming up all over the place as it has reseeded itself everywhere.
